After a feasibility study was done by the Michigan University in 2018 the community of Tepu decided to structure and make sustainable the fish industry in collaboration with Conservation International Suriname. For Tepu it means transforming their commercial activity of selling ornamental fisheries into a more sustainable community enterprise with little to no impact on the environment and the fish population.
Training and support to establish and manage a new foundation for the green ’fisheries’ industry’ and assisting the community to build a network of buyers. In partnership with Conservation International Suriname national regulations will be drafted to make the green fisheries industry more feasible and sustainable. This will help the community - who are the traditional stewards- to contribute to the conservation of 7.2 million-hectare in South Suriname and refrain from unsustainable practices like illegal logging and gold mining and generate an income for the community to thrive.
