Savitri Devi, from the village of Karimati in Jharkhand, India, is part of an initiative that’s changing lives and landscapes. As part of a growing community of over 4,000 women, Savitri is actively participating in this project that not only combats environmental degradation but also fosters leadership and entrepreneurship among women.
The project is ambitious, aiming to afforest 2,200 hectares of degraded farmland by cultivating five tree species, with a particular focus on the Arjuna tree. This effort is key for creating a significant carbon sink and improving soil quality. However, the benefits extend beyond environmental restoration. The Arjuna trees play a vital role in the region’s traditional silk production, providing new job opportunities for women like Savitri, who previously had limited options for economic advancement.
Recently, Nirmal, our Head of Project Development, visited the project site and had the opportunity to engage with many of the women involved. Savitri expressed her enthusiasm for the future, stating:
“There is a lot of hope and enthusiasm that we will also do silk rearing. The dream of earning through cocoon harvest will start soon. We will work hard. I look forward to it.”
This initiative is about more than just carbon removal. It’s about building futures and transforming communities through women’s leadership. As Savitri and her fellow participants work towards their goals, they exemplify the powerful impact that sustainable projects can have on both the environment and the lives of women.
