Key biodiversity area

This project is part of the Camdeboo Key Biodiversity Area (KBA), an internationally significant conservation site.

The Camdeboo Key Biodiversity Area (KBA) is a critical refuge for a diverse array of species, playing a fundamental role in global conservation efforts. It provides a habitat for 40 key species, spanning various taxonomic groups, including birds, butterflies, mammals, reptiles, and plants. Notably, one endangered species (the Camdeboo velvet worm) is found almost exclusively within the Camdeboo KBA, making this area indispensable for its continued survival. Beyond this, the region harbors 29 rare species, many of which have highly specialized habitat requirements that make them particularly vulnerable to environmental changes.

The Camdeboo KBA is considered 100% irreplaceable for the survival of 15 species, meaning that without the protection and restoration of this habitat, these species could face extinction. This underscores the urgent need for conservation and restoration efforts to ensure the long-term viability of these ecosystems.

Given its exceptional biodiversity value, the Camdeboo KBA stands as a priority for global conservation initiatives. Protecting and restoring this landscape is a vital measure to prevent species extinctions and maintain ecological balance in the area.
