The system comprises of a borehole with pipeline extension through a series of 7 communal water kiosks (Kavoo, Makutano, Kavumbu, Mbetwani, Itithini, Ndookeani, Ngomoni), 48 individual household connections and 3 institutional connections (Kavoo primary school, Kavumbuni mixed secondary school, Kalulini health centre).
SNV facilitated structuring and signing of a delegated management contract with Kitui Water and Sewerage Company (KITWASCO), under which the utility delegates water service delivery to Kavoo water committees while retaining the mandate for operational and maintenance support.
Through partner linkage, JICA has supported solarization of the borehole and installation of a new 15m3/hr. pump to ease the high cost of operation associated with diesel generator pumping. Installation of the solar system was completed in October 2023. Ove the coming months following solarisation, pumping cost saving is expected to improve the revenues.
As part of technical support, KITWASCO has trained Kavoo technicians on meter reading. This support, combined with SNV’s training on record keeping is expected to improve the overall operational efficiency of Kavoo borehole.
