American Bird Conservancy supported FBC to carry out the first assessment of the migratory bird community in El Silencio. From November 2021 to June 2022, our bird expert Pedro Cardona surveyed 24 100x50m transects in different landscape elements of the reserve. Pedro obtained 1,046 registers of 4,345 individuals of 31 species, 33% of which are reported as declining populations. Pedro also identified 15 plant species that are important for migratory birds, which we started reproducing in our plant nurseries and using to enrich our restoration activities, to improve the habitat for migratory birds in the reserve. All this time looking for birds also rewarded our knowledge on the bird community in El Silencio, increasing our list in 43 new registers, including 24 resident species.
Pedro also carried out workshops with the local community and El Silencio rangers to raise awareness and knowledge on migratory birds. These workshops were the starting point to build a children bird observation group in the community.
