Kraaibosch Forest Restoration Project Site B

The Kraaibosch Forest Restoration Project will restore degraded land, on the edge of the Garden Route National Park, in Kraaibosch, Knysna. This area is naturally vegetated with afro-montane forests, home to multiple endemic species, such as the Knysna Lourie, the knysna dwarf chameleon, and the last of the Knysna Elephants.

The project will benefit the natural ecology, through the removal of invasive vegetation, reforested with endemic and indigenous plant species, improving soil health, water carrying capacity while increasing biodiversity, and providing ecosystem services such as resilience to wildfire. The project also benefits the local community, through the mobilization of natural resources, from invasive species, such as firewood, and timber, creating employment for the local community. Additional social and environmental impact is generated through our volunteer program, and educational programs, sharing knowledge and developing skills related to ecosystem restoration.
