Monitoring two years post-planting has revealed that conditions on the site remain stable, with planted trees showing continued growth despite the pressures placed on the site by animal browsing, which remains a key barrier to optimal restoration success.
To address this key barrier, the Cape Parrot Project team will work with the local communities to construct a temporary fence around the key planting area to protect planted trees as well as the high levels of natural regeneration on the site from browsing by free-roaming livestock. This fence will only stay up until the planted trees are tall enough to not be severely impacted by livestock grazing.
In addition to the construction of the fence, the CPP team will maintain follow-up alien vegetation management activities across all areas previously thinned, as was successfully implemented in 2023.
The next round of monitoring will occur in September 2024 and will enable the project team to assess the effectiveness of these interventions and modify them as, or if, needed.
