A communal nursery was built in Sompondo village in 2017 by the Wild Bird Trust -Cape Parrot Project to empower the residents of Sompondo to be part of conservation efforts, while at the same time deriving financial benefits from the seedling buy-back scheme. A total of 17 community members use the nursery to grow seedlings from seeds collected from indigenous trees in the forest near the village.
These seedlings are then purchased by the Wild Bird Trust - Cape Parrot Project when they are approximately 40cm tall and are ready for planting at reforestation sites in the Amatholes.
