Capacity Building for Local Communities on Forest Land Allocation, Sustainable Forest Management and Forest Fire Management

After one year piloting the Forest Land Allocation Program 2018-2020 (FLAP), the Forest Department of Que Phong district found an entry point to accelerate the process of entitling forest land for communities and households in three communes--Dong Van, Thong Thu and Tien Phong: a participatory training on forest land allocation which offers the local people knowledge about FLA process and mandates of stakeholders, sustainable forest management, forest fire prevention, and skills on forest demarcation and forest resource assessment.
The district Forest Department collaborated with FLOURISH to organize training for four villages of Thong Thu commune. The ultimate goal of the training was to strengthen legal right for smallholders over their forest land with their updated Red Books which guarantee their full rights to engage in sustainable forest landscape restoration pathways. The training was expected to bring insights for the Commune Forest Council, the FLA program Steering Committee in Que Phong to consider revision of FLA procedures adapting to the local contexts and replication for the next phase.
One day training was held in each village from 24-27 September 2019. During the training, the participants learnt village forest development and protection plan, regulations on forest fire prevention. The trainees also practice developing FLA application and dossiers, forest mapping and forest area measurement.
