Project

The ABALOBI Pantry, a component of the ABALOBI Marketplace, offers marine resource-based products to consumers. These value added products are mainly produced and sold by women in coastal communities. The ABALOBI Pantry, developed in 2019 through a co-design process with women producers from coastal communities, provides an innovative revenue source for women fishers, offering a marketplace dedicated to communities selling products crafted from coastal harvested ingredients. These pockets of economic activity bring hope to impoverished communities where job opportunities are scarce. The ABALOBI Pantry operates as a limited online market, featuring coastal products crafted by women fishers. These products can be conveniently ordered through the ABALOBI Marketplace App, catering to chefs, delis, and individual buyers. Each product is fully traceable, accompanied by a QR code that narrates its origin and the artisans behind it.

Developing the skills of the ABALOBI Pantry producers and providing capacity building opportunities is a priority for ABALOBI. ABALOBI addresses skills development by supporting business development initiatives with producers, driving internal and buyer feedback processes to inform product development; and developing standard operating procedures for producers to use when developing products.

Furthermore, ABALOBI developed a basic training program destined to unlock entrepreneurship within fisherwomen. The program covers basic personal and kitchen hygiene, as well as preserving basics to utilise their traditional knowledge and cultural knowledge to sell value-add products.

The advantages of this initiative include facilitating market access for producers, providing support in logistics and storage, offering a traceable platform for producers to share their stories and cultural knowledge, and offering training and capacity-building in business fundamentals and costings.
