Strâmbu Băiut Forest Management Unit is located in the Northern part of Romania, along the Carpathian Mountains Range. It features a wide range of habitats, generating a mosaic matrix landscape with a large capacity to support a wide variety of plant- and animal species, including large carnivores such as brown bears, wolves and lynxes. Inside the Management Unit there are 2,900 hectares of Natura 2000 sites and a 600 hectares UNESCO site, designated to protect and conserve the local biodiversity.
Responsible forest management under FSC certification has been implemented since March 2010 on 2,300 hectares of forest. As part of this, the Management Unit have been genertaing payment for ecosystem services, which in 2019 were valued to 19,788,661 EUR/year in the protected area Natura 2000 sites (including production-, regulation and support-, and cultural ecosystem services).
