Project
Greenlandfill Meknes

Theory of change

The Greenlandfill Meknes project improves the leachate treatment and landfill gas capturing network of a landfill in Meknes, Morocco. The destruction of methane in the LFG will reduce emissions from the landfill.

Climate change mitigation

In Morocco, the capture of LFG is usually not mandatory and the required instalments are high investments that a landfill operator cannot always cover. Around 50% of LFG is methane, a potent greenhouse gas. By capturing and flaring landfill gas, the project effectively destroys methane, preventing its release into the atmosphere and helping to mitigate climate change.

Impact areas

1. Sustainable waste management

The landfill provides controlled and safe disposal of municipal waste in a region where informal landfills still exist. About 300,000 t of waste is collected and stored each year.

2. Employment opportunities

The project promotes a social and inclusive business model for local workers.

3. Clean water

Leachate is treated using state of the art reverse osmosis to produce distilled water.
