The State of Maranhão is located in a biogeographic transition area between several biomes and ecosystems and is recognized for the enormous variety of flora and fauna. The municipality of Alcântara has an area of 114,000 hectares and currently has about 20,000 inhabitants, most of whom are descendants of Quilombolas and indigenous people. About 80% of these people live in communities in rural areas. In the 1980s, the Brazilian Aerospace Program constructed the Alcântara Launch Center in the Alcântara territory, displacing the Quilombola communities that occupied the region.
These communities now face major environmental problems arising primarily from the degradation of springs. The source of the Peptal River, the most important for this area, is located in the settlement of Agrovillage Peptal and is responsible for supplying the city of Alcantara. But, part of the river's length is currently dry. The leading causes of deforestation are agribusiness, fires, pastures, urbanization, and timber harvesting.
The native vegetation of this site was initially classified as Amazonian forest and is located within the limits of the Legal Amazon biome, presenting a wide variety of species. Now it can be classified as a secondary forest, or "capoeirão."
This project aims to recover degraded areas by reforesting these areas of springs and rivers.
