In a significant project milestone, the ABALOBI Fisher app has recently been launched in the Chale Beach Management Unit ("BMU"), Kenya. The launch event included a comprehensive training session attended by 36 participants, including enumerators and nominated fishers.
The main objectives of the training were:
The meeting commenced with Mr. Jillo Katello, the MAC-P Project Coordinator, as the first speaker. Mr. Geoffrey Nyongesa, the outgoing fisheries officer, also made some opening remarks that set the tone for the day's proceedings. Mr. Katello provided a recap of previous community meetings, emphasizing the project's main goals and progress. The focus was on setting clear management objectives, particularly regarding beach seines, and eliciting feedback from the fishers.
A pivotal moment in the event was the introduction of the ABALOBI Fisher app. An ABALOBI staff member delivered a comprehensive presentation and demonstration of the application to the Chale BMU members. The Project Coordinator facilitated the step-by-step registration process for each fisher. To overcome potential barriers to smartphone access, WCS provided branded phones, ensuring equitable participation among fishers.
To enhance understanding and encourage the use of the ABALOBI Fisher app, participants engaged in group work and scenario-based training exercises. After an initial demonstration of the app's value proposition, each participant had the opportunity to interact with the app independently.
Subsequently, participants were divided into smaller groups and guided through various scenarios, simulating real-life fishing situations. Through hands-on practice and guidance, fishers familiarized themselves with the app's functionalities and data collection processes.
The launch of the ABALOBI Fisher app represents a significant milestone in the journey towards sustainable fisheries management and community empowerment in the Chale Beach Management Unit.
By equipping fishers with the tools and knowledge necessary to collect and use fishing data effectively, the project aims to foster more informed decision-making processes and promote sustainable fishing practices.
Furthermore, the introduction of the ABALOBI Fisher app underscores the importance of collaboration and innovation in addressing complex environmental and socio-economic challenges. By harnessing the collective efforts of stakeholders and leveraging technology, we can create a more resilient and equitable future for coastal communities and marine ecosystems.
