In the heart of Kenya's coastal communities, where fishing is not just a livelihood but a way of life, technology is vital in assisting fishers to connect with the global market and secure their livelihoods. To support small-scale fishers, ABALOBI introduced its Fisher and Monitor platforms so communities can track their activities and manage their resources. These tools are transforming how fishers track their activities, manage their businesses, and contribute to sustainable fishing practices.
Since its introduction, the ABALOBI Fisher app has been embraced by the Chale Beach Management Unit (BMU), marking a significant step forward in fisheries management. Over the past year, six monitors have documented an impressive 5,564 fishing trips from three landing sites, amounting to over 22 tons of catch. Simultaneously, 60 registered fishers from the Chale BMU have logged 3,302 entries via the app, capturing 14 tons of catch comprising more than 22 species.
These statistics are more than just numbers; they reflect how fishers are embracing data-driven decision-making to enhance their livelihoods and resource management. Fishers now have access to real-time insights into their catch and income, enabling them to better manage their resources and adapt to market demands.
Building on this success, ABALOBI is expanding its reach. Preparations are underway to introduce the Fisher and MONITOR apps to the Bodo and Funzi communities by January 2025. This expansion reflects ABALOBI's commitment to scaling its impact across Kenya’s coastal regions. The tools are being refined to ensure they meet the unique needs of these new communities, including sourcing site coordinates, species data, and gear specifications.
As the apps become more widely available, they promise to transform how fishers across Kenya manage their livelihoods. By offering scalable and adaptable tools, the initiative is contributing to a framework that supports long-term sustainability in small-scale fisheries.
The rollout of the ABALOBI apps is more than a technological upgrade; it’s a step toward empowering fishers to take control of their futures. Through collaborative efforts with ABALOBI, communities are leveraging data collection and analysis to make informed decisions, improve their incomes, and contribute to the conservation of marine ecosystems.
As ABALOBI looks to the future, the vision is clear: to equip every small-scale fisher with the resources they need to thrive. With the planned expansion to Bodo and Funzi and the ongoing success in Chale, the ripple effects of this initiative are set to extend far beyond Kenya’s shores, offering a model of sustainability and empowerment for small-scale fisheries worldwide.
Together, fishers and partners are demonstrating that technology can be a powerful ally in the fight for sustainable livelihoods and vibrant ecosystems. The journey has just begun, and the possibilities are as vast as the ocean.
