Planet Indonesia has been working with communities in this 78,000 ha coastal ecosystem. These extremely carbon rich forests provide important services to both humans and biodiversity through coastal protection, fisheries, carbon storage, and more. The carbon stored in this forest is roughly equivalent to 7 million passenger cars driven non-stop for a year.
Since our work has began we have seen a reduction in deforestation and in our initial project site only 1 hectare of forest was lost between 2015-2018. Working to engage local solutions we have also significantly improved rural livelihoods through periodic fisheries closures and the creation of a Kalimantan’s first Locally Managed Marine Area to gives management rights and tenure back to communities. Since our work began we have seen improvements in fish stocks, reduced deforestation, improved health, and more resilient livelihoods.
