Eastern Obolo Mangrove Project

This project  entails restoration and sustainable management of the Eastern Obolo mangroves in Nigeria which has become degraded mainly due to deforestation activities.  Nigerian mangrove  forest is the largest in Africa  and the third largest mangrove forest in the world. . Ecosystem services provided by this unique environment are flood control, ground water re-fill, reservoir of biodiversity, fuel wood, cultural values etc. The ecosystem also plays important role in climate change mitigation because of its high blue carbon sequestration potential. Therefore, there is urgent need to restore and conserve the mangroves of the Niger Delta region. The project targets planting back about 10,000,000 mangroves trees in the next 3-5 years . The project has mobilised community based volunteers to assist in planting/managing the mangroves.
