Mara Mangrove Restoration Project

The Mara Mangue Mangrove Restoration Initiative aims to reverse ecosystem degradation by restoring mangrove habitats while strengthening the livelihoods of the communities that depend on them. Built on close collaboration with local residents, the project combines ecological restoration, sustainable resource management, and environmental education.

A central component of the initiative is the establishment of community-led nurseries, where mangrove propagules and native tree species are raised before being transplanted into degraded areas. These nurseries support restoration while building local skills and ownership. Efforts also extend to restoring riparian forests along the Capivara River, improving water quality, stabilizing riverbanks, and reconnecting ecological corridors.

The project is piloting the reintroduction of Conocarpus erectus (Button Mangrove) alongside erosion control measures such as strategic planting and natural barriers. These approaches help stabilize vulnerable coastal and riverine zones and create conditions for mangroves to re-establish.

Community participation is at the core of the initiative. We will be working with four communities, Irirituiua, Boa Vista, Conceição, and Ponta do Suares. Local members are involved in propagule collection, nursery management, planting, and monitoring, ensuring restoration is guided by local knowledge. Fishermen and shellfish gatherers also receive training on sustainable harvesting practices aligned with conservation goals.

To reduce pressure on mangrove ecosystems, agroforestry systems are being introduced to provide alternative sources of income, fuelwood, and fodder. Environmental education further supports these efforts through participatory waste management and conservation awareness programs.

By integrating restoration, livelihoods, and education, the initiative strengthens coastal resilience, supports biodiversity, and empowers communities to sustainably manage their natural resources.
