Project
French Polynesia Marine Conservation Program

The French Polynesia Marine Conservation Program is a transformative, field-based educational experience that connects local youth from Tahiti and Mo’orea with the science and culture of marine conservation. Developed by Nature and Oceans Adventures (NOA) in collaboration with Reva Atea, the program integrates environmental science, traditional ecological knowledge, and community engagement to protect French Polynesia’s globally important coral reef ecosystems.
The program begins in Tahiti, where students are introduced to native ecosystems and Polynesian ecological traditions. Guided by local mentors, they explore the cultural significance of the ocean in Polynesian society and begin building a foundation in marine ecology and sustainability. Participants then travel to Mo’orea, home to vibrant northern and southern reef systems that are ideal for hands-on scientific study.
In Mo’orea, students participate in coral reef monitoring activities, including biodiversity assessments, fish counts, and coral health surveys, all conducted through guided snorkel expeditions. These field efforts are paired with workshops on marine biology, reef ecology, and data analysis. Under the guidance of scientists such as Aeata Richerd and Dr. Alexandre Fellous, students learn to identify key reef species and understand the ecological interactions that sustain reef health.
In addition to scientific activities, students visit a local agricultural high school to explore the land-sea connection. Through permaculture and agroecology workshops, they discover how sustainable farming practices on land help protect marine life from runoff, erosion, and pollution. This holistic approach helps students understand the interdependence between terrestrial and marine ecosystems.
Beyond technical skills, the program emphasizes personal growth, leadership, and environmental ethics. By learning from local conservation leaders and participating in real-world research, students gain confidence and a sense of responsibility toward their environment. Their work directly contributes to ongoing scientific efforts and informs local conservation strategies.
Our long-term goal is to expand access to the program for up to 500 students each year, prioritizing participants from under-resourced communities. We aim to strengthen educational partnerships, increase the availability of scientific materials, and improve the capacity of our field sites in Tahiti and Mo’orea. As the program grows, so does our vision: to create a network of empowered young ocean advocates committed to marine conservation across the Pacific.
This program not only equips students with marine science knowledge—it fosters a deep, personal connection to the ocean and the cultural values that sustain it. Whether students go on to become scientists, educators, or community leaders, they leave the program with a powerful message: the ocean’s future is in their hands.
