Certification of Oil Palm Farmers in Bahaur
Bahaur: Support oil palm farmers to achieve RSPO certification in oil palm producing villages

The independent, oil palm smallholders in Bahaur village have been supported to be certified according to the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) and Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) standards.

The certification process commenced on 14 March 2023 and involved mapping of smallholders, training and supporting farmers to obtain all the necessary legal documents. Farmers were also trained on free and fair work, occupational health and safety, and identification of high conservation value areas.

Farmers in the village belong to a district, oil palm farmer association called the Asosiasi Kelapa Sawit Bahalap Seruyan (APKSBS), which was established to provide services for all farmers in Seruyan district who wish to be certified. The district farmer association aims to reduce the costs of certification by bringing it to scale.

So far, this activity has provided support to 48 farmers from Gapoktan Gawi Bahaum, covering a total area of 45 hectares and involving 53 land parcels. The estimated total production per year is 18 tons per hectare, though this value is still being verified and the audit process is ongoing.

Impacts: Oil palm farmers have learned good agricultural practices and obtained legal documentation.
