The village of Pematang Limau is located in the Seruyan Hilir sub-district of Seruyan district in Central Kalimantan. It is home to various ethnic groups, including the Banjar people (originally from South Kalimantan), who have dominated the population since the expansion of the Sultaness Banjar. Other ethnic groups such as the Javanese and Madurese settled in Seruyan Hilir during the transmigration program of 1992–1993. Seruyan Hilir is geographically located in the coastal area and has become a settlement destination for the Bugis, who spend their lives on houseboats while traveling long distances to fish and trade.

Pematang Limau has a total population of 4,082 people, and the local communities primarily engage in farming (cattle and oil palm) as well as fishing activities (aquaculture and fishing). Pematang Limau is categorized as a developed village with accessible health care and education facilities. Moreover, the village demonstrates potential in a range of economic activities, including agriculture, cattle farming, and fish farming. Additionally, the presence of trading centers, such as shops and village markets, further enhances the economic opportunities available in the area. Pematang Limau village is prone to disasters such as floods, landslides, and forest fires, which require immediate disaster mitigation and management actions.

The majority of Pematang Limau’s total area (192.297 ha or around 88.43% of the total area) is classified as state forests. However, forest cover can only be found in 8% of the total area. Less than 10% of the total village area is covered by palm oil plantations. A total of 87% of the plantations is owned by oil palm companies, with the remaining 13% owned by the local community (Figure 5). Furthermore, a total of 3.996 ha of peatland is scattered around Buluh Besar and Seruyan River, which is also part of the Desa Peduli Gambut, a pilot program of Peatland Restoration Authority that focuses on peatland conservation, signifying the community’s recognition of the importance of preserving these ecosystems. Their efforts involve activities such as reforestation, water management, and sustainable land use practices to prevent peatland degradation and promote their long-term sustainability.
