European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis) is the only native turtle in Slovakia. It is endangered mostly by disappearing of suitable habitats for breeding and living as well as by increasing numbers of invasive Yellow-Bellied Slider (Trachemys scripta). The European pond turtle needs sandy soil for laying eggs. There are some fitting spots around the Danube. However, many of them are overgrown and not achievable for them. That is why we are reintroducing extensive pasture to keep the spots ready for the turtles. Predators as well as agricultural machinery pose danger for the hatching eggs. That is why we are training a dog to look for the eggs. This way we can do monitoring of the turtles and protect them from predators - metal nets are placed over the nests to prevent them from digging out.
