We have been rewilding the area of Čiliž swamps for a long time. The main focus is on restricting the area for nature protection and sustainable management and bringing back water to the area that has been taken away by meliorational channels. The wetlands are home for many rare and endangered species, among other the pannonian root vole (Microtus oeconomus mehelyi) - endemic subspecies and glacial relict, retain water in landscape, produce important biomass, better quality of ground water and help mitigate consequences of climate change. Wetlands can store up to 240 tons of carbon per hectare! By flooding the dried out areas we can suppress invasive species that are concurrent for the native ones.
The majority of the funding is needed to buy lands to ensure nature protection in the long term. We are constantly looking for owners who don't use their lands and are willing to leave the land for rewilding. We buy the lands for an adequate price per m2 for the given type of land in the region. After the purchase the land use is subjected to nature protection. Another part of funding is going to be used to dig small channels to lead water towards the area.
