Another step to restoration of Danube inland delta

Vojčianske river arm is a part of the inland Danube delta, the biggest inland river delta in Europe. After building the dam and power plant in Gabčíkovo the delta has been drying out. One of the reasons is that there is much less water in the natural river bed, another one is that because of the lack of the water dynamic and gravel the river bed has deepened down and the water from there can't reach the area of inland delta. That is why it has to be supplied by other sources of water. Two important passages for vehicles and pipes with the ability to retain water in the area were constructed. Nevertheless they have not been sufficient and caused deposition of sediments in the river branch bed.

Two big frame culverts are planned to be constructed to allow greater intake of water and create more accessible migration possibilities for fish while still being able to enter the area. Applying the measures will help restore 4.5 km of the river arm and adjacent wetland biotopes. The needed water dynamic will avert sedimentation.
