After the water dam and power plant in Gabčíkovo was built the inland Danube delta became dry. The former floodplain forests were transformed to production forests and covered by fast growing non-native tree species. Where possible we are planting native species adapted to wet environments and fluctuating water regimes - Willows, black and white poplars. These species have a robust tree crown which can be used by birds species (e.g. Black stork - Ciconia nigra and White-tailed eagle - Heliaeethus albicilla) to nests. The root system has a great ability to protect soil and retain water. These species have a longer life span and in the later years provide living space for various insect species and bird nesting. Planting bio corridors and biocenters is part of the activity. The aim is to connect isolated plots and sustain population quality of animal species.
