Project
Peatland project Rosenhäger Wiese

Initial state

The project area is a historic peatland site. The area was drained by creating ditches and thus made available for agricultural use. Since then, it has been used as permanent grassland for fodder production and is cut several times a year.

Target state

The aim is to create a moorland biotope over the years that will prevent CO2 emissions and provide urgently needed habitats for highly specialised animal and plant species. This is necessary as 70% of all moorland plants are threatened with extinction due to a lack of habitat.

Measures

Inspection of the former moor area

Firstly, tests and assessments were carried out for the project area in order to determine the area's renaturalisation potential. To this end, the emission avoidance to be expected from the renaturalisation was also determined. This was followed by the application for the enhancement measures to the lower nature conservation authority.

Rewetting of the Rosenhäger Wiese

The water level will then be raised for the project area. This is done by dismantling the former drainage ditches so that the Rosenhäger Wiese can be rewetted.

Finalisation of measures and review

Finally, the completed measures are approved and secured by the lower nature conservation authorities.
