Pintikilie

The aim of the project is to lift the village of Pintikilie in northern Sierra Leone out of extreme poverty through investments in small-scale agriculture and the creation of food forests while storing large amounts of CO2. The investments take place at the village level because the village community is the largest social unit and joint decisions are made that benefit everyone. The project developer finances bean seeds, tools, food and equipment for an entire annual season as well as the establishment of tree nurseries. The tools are mostly made by the local blacksmith and the tree nurseries are also run by the village. This means that local value is created and people are trained in the development of agroforestry systems. On an area of 44 hectares, villagers work collaboratively to prepare the land, construct planting beds and plant a lush agroforestry system with 10 tree species and beans, peanuts and other seeds as cover crops. The harvest reaches a quantity that allows not only sales in the same year, but also the storage of seeds for the following season. The project developer "Climate Nuts" is among the 5 nominees for the German SDG Award and UNIDO Innovation Award 2023.
