In the Antsiranana region (northern coastal zone), a natural succession of mangroves should protect coastal areas against cyclones and coastal erosion, while species closer to the sea help break the waves and species closer to the land help break the strong winds. Faced with the destruction of these species, Graine de Vie is restoring several plots to allow the reconstitution of the natural mangrove ecosystem, favouring the repopulation of crabs, small fish and shrimps.
This project offers several benefits: protection of the coast, windbreaks, food for aquatic animals, shade, crabs, shrimps and security/shelter for fish. In addition to the restoration of the mangrove, the project also addresses a socio-economic issue for the fishermen's associations.
