The Social Forestry Project started in 2022 in Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar & Alipurduar. Primary Focus: (i) Increase green cover for more carbon sequestration and climate balance, (ii) Convert barren land into forestry land. (iii) Develop alternative streams of livelihood and income generation from forestry, especially Non-Timber Forest Produce. The current activities are concentrated around community mobilisation and identification of participants; land identification and demarcation; fine-tuning legalities/agreements, etc. This area is under-developed and many of the local people are without jobs and also unable to derive any income from the non-arable land. Most resort to some form of subsistence farming. The poverty has a cascading impact on the health and general well-being of the communities.
