39 Ha former ranchland deforested for cattle
Restoring the site to tropical dry forest
Site has an open cenote and many Mayan ruins
2015 Restoration of the site began with fencing out the cattle and asking neighbours to keep their cattle from roaming.
2016 Ecosystem Restoration Camp planted 8 ha of trees grown on site from locally collected seed from healthy mother trees, the collected seed was also hand planted.
Reference ecosystem: Kaxil Kiuic biological reserve of 5000ha
Biodiversity keeps increasing and the forest has closed, reducing soil temperature and increasing moisture. An organic layer has formed and the soil has changed from red to brown. https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/resilient-ecosystems-institute-a-c for our species photographed
From our successes on this project, we are scaling up to help other landowners restore and preserve their lands and create resilient ecosystems.
