Project
Community-Led Catch Data Monitoring

The ABALOBI Monitor app has been deployed in multiple regions of South Africa under various projects:

Struisbaai

In Struisbaai, ABALOBI collaborates with fisherwomen to collect community-centered data on catch landings at Struisbaai Harbour, focusing on Yellowtail and Carpenter. Monitoring has been ongoing since 2016 and forms part of a Fisheries Improvement Project.

Olifants River

In the three communities of Ebenheazer, Papendorp, and Olifants Drift, community data collectors have been trained to log data on Mullet landings in each area. This data collection has been ongoing since 2019.

Port St Johns & Port Edward

In collaboration with WWF, ABALOBI has begun trialing the use of the ABALOBI Monitor app in these communities. Initial pilot work was conducted in early 2023, with three months of monitoring at one landing site in Port St. Johns. Building on these insights and adapting the technology to the local context, ABALOBI has since trained ten cooperative members from Port St. Johns, two from Port Edward, and two WWF in-community staff members on the use of these tools. They will commence data collection and training of other fishers in mid-February 2024.

Hamburg

A small pilot project conducted in Hamburg yielded valuable insights into adapting to shore-based fishing and managing monitors in a remote setting. Data collection occurred sporadically, with training and intensive daily shore monitoring conducted in late 2023.
