Despite the severe drought that was affecting the country and delaying the plantation season, our mission continued with the engagement of 84 volunteers in the control of alien species. With the support of the national scout corps and other volunteers, a considerable area was covered. This included some areas where access was difficult, as it was necessary to deal with them since they could serve as refuges for the alien species, thus compromising all the future work. The number of acacia saplings uprooted is difficult to quantify, but in the end the difference visible in the landscape was significant. This operation greatly increased the alien-species-free area that functions as a defense line around the Pedra Amarela perimeter. It was also an important conservation task, giving space for spontaneous natural regeneration in the area. In subsequent interventions, natural regeneration will be complemented through plantations, filling the gaps previously occupied by the alien species. The group, consisting mainly of youths and some children, and who all wanted to take their and the planet’s future into their own hands, was very enthusiastic and committed to the task.
