Sri Lanka is experiencing one of the worst humanitarian disasters in its history.
Torrential rains have triggered catastrophic floods and landslides, displacing over a million people. Thousands of families have lost their homes — and, in many heartbreaking cases, their loved ones.
I am Manju Kumarasamy, coordinating relief efforts from Toronto, Canada, together with a growing international advisory group based in Ireland, India, Brazil, the Netherlands, and Germany. Our aim is to provide lifesaving support now, and to build transparency and trust into every action we take. We are working on getting support for 2 regions. Each region has two sites plus a collection site. Two people are leading support on the ground on each site.
🕊 Coordination on the Ground
Relief efforts are being organized through two main coordination centers:
Dagonna (Western Province) — Led by Veraj, coordinating a team of volunteers who distribute food, medical aid, and hygiene supplies to affected villages.
Balangoda (Sabaragamuwa Province) — Led by my uncle Chandrasiri, who collaborates with local government representatives and community leaders to reach remote families.
Both teams are in constant communication, sharing verified information and documenting deliveries through a public transparency platform accessible to all supporters.
🌿 Guided by Expert Advice
We are receiving strategic advisory from a Commission Member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) — ensuring that our immediate response and long-term actions respect ecological integrity and contribute to sustainable landscape recovery. We are also working with Dr. Ashutosh Mohanty based in India who has international experience in working with such events.
Also part of the team is Josie Mackenzie, who founded Amma Natural Textiles. It is a social enterprise championing the tradition of hand weaving in Nuwara Eliya, a tea estate region in Sri Lanka. AMMA was founded by Josie Mackenzie who was curious to explore the role natural dyes play in the Sri Lankan textile industry and how, when used in combination with handloom could contribute to providing livelihood creation for women living rurally.
We are also establishing partnerships with registered NGOs on the ground, who will soon be integrated into our transparent project dashboard. This will allow donors and institutions to see in real time how funds are used and where help is reaching.
💔 The Human and Environmental Crisis
The floods struck during the school holidays, when many children were staying with grandparents in rural areas while their parents worked in cities. Entire families have lost contact, and in some villages, mudslides buried homes with families inside.
These disasters are not isolated tragedies. Years of deforestation and land mismanagement have destabilized the soil, while global warming has heated surrounding ocean waters — amplifying rainfall and storm intensity. What we’re witnessing is not only a humanitarian emergency, but also a climate-driven environmental collapse.
🌍 Radical Transparency and Global Solidarity
All funds, partnerships, and ground activities will be published through an open transparency platform.
This ensures accountability, coordination, and public trust — and helps global partners identify where additional help is needed most.
