Stronger Together: ABALOBI & ST Co-op Set Course for a Thriving Struisbaai Fishery

The ST Co-op and ABALOBI came together in Struisbaai for a pivotal meeting on 11 December 2024, marking a new phase of collaboration aimed at strengthening small-scale fishers, market opportunities, and co-op leadership. With the ST Co-op emerging as a formalised entity, the discussion focused on how ABALOBI and the co-op can work together to build sustainable infrastructure, improve market access, and ensure long-term success for Struisbaai’s fishing community.

Building a Shared Vision

The meeting was opened with a prayer, setting the tone for constructive dialogue and mutual respect. ST Co-op Chairperson Morgan acknowledged ABALOBI’s role in securing a R60/kg price for yellowtail this season, expressing optimism for the export pilot’s success.

ABALOBI clarified that its goal has always been to support fisher groups, not act as a competitor. Rather than managing infrastructure or fish sales alone, ABALOBI seeks to connect 20–30 co-ops under one umbrella, allowing fishers to collectively negotiate better prices and market influence. The message was clear: strength lies in unity.

Key Topics & Opportunities

  • ST Co-op’s Growth & Independence – The co-op aims to take on infrastructure, manage fish processing, and expand market access. Their long-term vision is self-sufficiency, with ABALOBI acting as a partner in capacity-building.

  • Government Support & Co-op Strengthening – Leveraging our team member, Abongile’s expertise, the co-op is keen to navigate government programs for funding and support.

  • Market Interactions & Price Transparency – Open conversations about pricing, market competition, and co-op-led negotiations helped align expectations and strategies.

  • Silvers Pricing Challenges – Fishers raised concerns about low silvers pricing, prompting discussions on building a sustainable market for this species, despite existing industry challenges.

  • Quality Control (QC) Services – ST Co-op explored potential access to ABALOBI’s Quality Control systems at a more affordable rate to help them meet export standards while maintaining viability.

Yellowtail Export Pilot: A Fast-Paced Season

Rapid Catch Rates – Fishers in Struisbaai caught nearly two-thirds of the planned 48-ton export quota in just two weeks, much faster than expected. This created logistical challenges, but ABALOBI is working on solutions.

Histamine Testing Success – Tests showed exceptionally low histamine levels, confirming that Struisbaai’s fish meet premium export standards.

International Buyer Engagement – ABALOBI updated fishers on Diversity Seafoods, an Irish buyer selling into the US, UK, and Europe. The pilot’s success depends on delivering consistent, high-quality volumes, with ABALOBI actively securing additional buyers.

Action Plan: What’s Next?

  • Develop a Roadmap – ABALOBI and ST Co-op to outline collaborative efforts for 2025.
  • Formalise the Partnership – A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) will be drafted to clarify roles and objectives.
  • Expand Buyer Engagement – ABALOBI will explore ways for ST Co-op to participate in market discussions.
  • Set Up a Central Co-op Email – To improve communication and coordination.
  • Form a Working Group – Representatives from both ABALOBI and ST Co-op will focus on key projects.
  • Plan the Next Meeting – ABALOBI will host a follow-up session with both Struisbaai co-ops in the new year.

Charting the Course Forward

The meeting ended with a shared commitment to focused efforts, transparency, and collective progress. With ABALOBI’s market insights, ST Co-op’s leadership, and fisher participation, the Struisbaai fishing community is on a strong path toward greater autonomy, profitability, and long-term sustainability.

The message is clear: By working together, co-ops, fishers, and ABALOBI can build a future where Struisbaai’s seafood is not only sustainable but also profitable for the fishers who bring it to shore.
