Ameerega trivittata

One of the frog species most seen in the forest of the ACP Panguana is Ameerega trivittata.
This frog has a striking color that varies from green to yellow-green. Ameerga trivittata is a diurnal and terrestrial species whose size can be up to 42 mm in females and 50 mm in males, being considered one of the largest species in the poison dart frog family (Dendrobatidae).

Among the widely studied poison dart frogs, the territorial behaviour of the species Ameerega trivittata has been repeatedly studied and it was assumed that males are territorial while females are not. During the years 2014 and 2015, a group of scientists carried out a study in ACP Panguana on the social behaviour of this species.

The study found that females also inhabit territories and that male and female territories are widely variable in size.

Thanks to the individual pattern of coloration on the back it is possible to distinguish individuals of this species. Therefore, it is not necessary to mark individuals for behavioural studies.
