Divers at Tankers Reef have been trained to cull purple urchins with a pointy hammer by smashing them in place or removing them. Special care is taken in removing urchins in order to not impact other species or damage the substrate they reside in.

Urchins in cracks are specifically not removed as they consume drift and do not exhibit kelp-destroying behaviors.
