Adopting multifunctional cactus!

One of the neighbours was so kind to think of us when she wanted to get rid of the cactuses growing in her garden. For us this cactus called Prickly Pear. also known as Opuntia or Figa da India is extremely useful.
As you might have read in earlier posts, we use this plant to create a protective natural solution for the fire risk. Given the fact that the cactus is basically a solid form of water, it will break the fire in its tracks. But there are many more reasons this plant is so useful:

  • They absorb water from the air and put in in the ground
  • They make roots quickly, even in the dry period. Cutting open a leaf and putting it in a small hole in the ground will suffice.
  • They create delicious fruits and edible young leaves.
  • The leaves can serve as very rich biomass to protect young trees while gradually feeding them with the water inside.
  • They survive even in the most dry climates.
  • The can serve as a placenta to young trees seeds of trees.
  • They can serve as a pioneer plant to start up the natural successional processes.

Thank you, we will take good care of them!
