Teaching kids how to plant trees during homeschooling!

"And that is how you plant a tree!" That is how the kids concluded their instruction video for their classmates.

We took some kids from the community outside to plant some fruit trees. This way they can learn where fruit is coming from, and what you have to do before you can actually eat them. Mattie (our founder and man on the ground) dug some big holes, provided compost, charcoal, sheepswhool, sawdust and fruit trees and the kids did the rest. They were very motivated to learn how to plant and create a comfortable environment for them

  1. remove the tree from its pot and put it in a bucket of water for a couple of minutes so the roots can absorb the water
  2. making a nice 'bed' for the trees with sheepswool - it will serve as a sponge to hold water and nutrient once decomposed.
  3. mix compost (nutrients or 'food' for the soil) and charcoal (will hold water and nutrients in the soil to feed the tree) in the soil and put a layer of it in the hole.
  4. put the tree on the bottom of the hole and fill it up with the mix of compost, charcoal, and soil.
  5. put sawdust on top- this will serve as mulch to protect the soil and will feed the soil while it gradually decomposes. And off course, it will serve as a blanket as the kids described it.
And that's how you plant a tree!
And that's our first step in providing nature programs with kids!
