Last week the sheep were grazing right in front of our garden, and they were there for a reason.
Sheep can play an important role in restoring nature with their grazing skills and manure. When you use these qualities in a good way you can improve soil dramatically. A helpful method is 'rotational grazing': strategically moving them around over fenced off pieces of land. This brings a lot of benefits for the soil and the ecosystem:

  • Improving soil fertility
  • More resistance against drought
  • Reducing food costs
  • Natural grass mower
  • Naturally controlling undesired plants

Balance and timing is key in these methods to optimize the impact of the qualities of the sheep, but if you keep these in mind, they can help you improve your soil drastically. Here at Vinha Velha the sheep are used for this purpose on some scale.

Good weekend everybody!
