Stopping the biodiversity loss of water bodies - despite climate change

Biodiversity is even more endangered in water than on land: The habitats of endangered species such as the grayling (picture) will shift because of rising water temperatures, due to climate change. And if the right countermeasures are not taken, they will shrink further – also because of obstructions and pollutants. Researchers investigating Switzerland's water bodies as part of this project are seeking to understand exactly in which locations the most urgent action must be taken to react to future developments. If the right places are targeted, the overall situation can be improved. This knowledge, enriched through important perspectives, will help take vital measures. In a first stakeholder process during four workshops in 2023 with representatives from the federal government, canton, municipalities, NGOs and agricultural associations, the necessary lines of action for the protection of biodiversity hotspots were developed. In the second phase of the project, starting in 2024, these will be deepened in other regions with the local stakeholders and the responsible federal and cantonal authorities.
