This picture shows a site being prepared for planting. The team removed old tree stumps and vegetation, put the woody material in a windrow – a long line laid out to dry in the wind – and set fire to it. The resulting ash is then incorporated into the soil, as it can be a natural source of potassium and trace elements. It also has a liming effect, so can help to remedy excessively acidic soils.
