Miheret W. and her family live in Kalamin. They’re awaiting their first apple crop after joining WeForest’s livelihoods scheme in 2021, when they received 5 apple tree seedlings and other species to diversify their homestead into a productive agroforestry system, able to provide food, fuelwood, forage for bees and fodder and shade for their animals.
They fenced an area of 25 m², and with frequent watering and manure to enhance growth – as well as applying ashes to the soil, a local method for managing termites – they’re excited to soon find out how their own home-grown apples will taste! “In the future we will add more apples and other trees,” said Miheret. “Our production will be not only for our own consumption, but also for the market.”
