One of the project’s aims is to increase families’ incomes through irrigation-based vegetable production. 58-year-old Bitew A., a father of seven children, was struggling for many years to make his 0.375 hectares of land productive and raise enough food and income to take care of his family. As his land is irrigable, he is one of a group of ten farmers who received a water pump from WeForest and The Hunger Project to irrigate their vegetable gardens.
As a result of this water supply, and by tending his crops well, he has been able to raise 335,000 ETB from sales of his tomatoes, potatoes, onions and maize - that’s nearly US$6000. “Nowadays I am the one who is able to support my relatives to obtain seeds and agricultural materials; I’m transformed from the borrower to the lender! I really appreciate the great support I received from WeForest and THP that has contributed to my turning point.”
