Out of the first 212 farmers selected to take part in the project, only 29% were women. We'd noticed poor attendance by women during community meetings, and the men said it's because they were taking care of the house. We explained the importance of women being part of beekeeping and natural resource conservation, and among the second group of 194 selected, 54% were women! Now, of the total 600 farmers taking part so far, 380 are men and 220 are women. In addition, we have recruited women bee mentors on the project. Although they represent just 20% of the total number of bee mentors, they are the first female ones across all of WeForest Zambia's beekeeping projects.
