About

The Red Panda Network (RPN) is a non-profit organization dedicated to conserving red pandas (Ailurus fulgens) and their habitats in the Himalayan region, particularly in Nepal. Founded in 2007, RPN takes a community-based, science-driven approach to address the pressing threats faced by this endangered species, as listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Mission & Vision
RPN’s mission is to protect wild red pandas and their habitat by educating and empowering local communities, ensuring a sustainable future for both the species and the broader Himalayan ecosystem. The organization envisions red pandas as a key indicator species, symbolizing a healthy, thriving mountain ecosystem.
For the sustainable conservation of this endangered species, RPN focuses on the four pragmatic components of the "conservation quartet" which are:
1. Research – Conduct scientific studies to better understand red panda populations, habitat use, and threats.
2. Education – Raising awareness through outreach programs, school initiatives, and community workshops.
3. Community Engagement – Actively involving local people in conservation efforts, recognizing them as key stakeholders.
4. Implementation – Protecting and restoring red panda habitats while providing sustainable livelihood options to reduce dependency on harmful practices.

Core Conservation Initiatives
• Community Engagement – RPN empowers locals through Red Panda Protection Committees (RPPCs), fostering grassroots conservation.
• Habitat Protection – Focused on reforestation, protected areas, and reducing human-wildlife conflict.
• Scientific Research – Uses camera traps and field surveys to track populations and inform conservation.
• Education & Awareness – Runs school programs and community workshops to promote long-term conservation.
• Sustainable Livelihoods – Supports eco-tourism, sustainable farming, and alternative incomes to reduce harmful practices.
