Project
Rewilding the Affric Highlands

In the Affric Highlands of Scotland, Rewilding Europe is working with Trees for Life and other local partners to aid the recovery of natural landscapes. Nature corridors will become more wooded. Wild forests and montane uplands, connected by naturally regenerating tree cover, will increasingly support a rich diversity of life. And through rewetting, peatlands will be restored to the vibrant, carbon and water-storing ecosystems they once were.

Connected habitats will help the movement of wildlife, supporting the recovery of golden eagles, red grouse, short-eared owls, mountain hares, and river species such as salmon, trout, ospreys and otters. The Affric Highlands emblem is the Scottish wildcat, and through habitat restoration, efforts will be made to help save this species from extinction.

Working with local landowners, Affric Highlands is taking large-scale nature recovery to a new level, with the aim of re-peopling this rural area and bolstering its economy. Nature-based initiatives will create both resilient ecosystems and communities. Affric Highlands is built upon the belief that nature, people and livelihoods can and should support one another to thrive.
