Portugal

Dry, dryer, dryest
In Portugal, we reforest areas that have been affected by forest fires due to dryness and desertification. Every summer wildfires burn and dominate the lives of rural people. In drought years, we experience fires of such intensity and magnitude; the loss of human and animal life, habitat, homes and livelihoods is utterly disastrous.

Natural forests and the fire-resistant landscapes that developed in Portugal have been replaced with hundreds of thousands of hectares of pine and eucalyptus monoculture: tree species that grow fast, absorb all moist from the soil, and burn very easily.

The monocultures are literally drying out the country. The loss of natural vegetation has broken local water cycles and water cannot be absorbed through the sun-baked soils that are inadequately shaded by the needles and leaves of the pine and eucalyptus. In the current conditions, when fires are started, they have perfect conditions to burn wildly out of control as they did in 2017.

Three goals of planting in Portugal
1. Restore ecosystems
2. Protect biodiversity
3. Engage community
