Stansted Park Foundation – Wythy Piece

This site is 0,35 hectares, is located in Wythy Piece, owned by The Stansted Park Foundation.

This woodland area is not far from the coast and the forest is open to the public. In total, the area is 480ha of mixed woodland and part of a designated Grade 2* Historic Park on the border between West Sussex and Hampshire.

The trees existing in this plot previously suffered badly from ash dieback disease and are, therefore, removed. Ash dieback is a serious disease of ash trees caused by the fungus Hymenoscyphus fraxineus. The disease causes leaf loss and crown dieback in affected trees and can lead to the death of the tree. We want to restore the broadleaved woodland with high biodiversity value. We want to regenerate and (re)develop but also plant and diversify the forest so that it is more resilient to hazards that may be encountered in the near future.

The trees will be planted from November 2022 to March 2023. The trees will be planted at 2260 trees per hectare (3x2m) and protected by 1.5m Tubex tree guards on hardwood stakes. We plant an intimate mix of species, mainly native broadleaves: oak, wild cherry, small-leaved lime, and wild service tree. The trees are all hand planted by our regular and trusted contractor after delivery from the nursery.
