Project
Vilcanota: Restoring Peru's highland forests
Peru, Vilcanota, Cusco started 2001 Active Restoration, Tourism, Natural Forest Management, Conservation, Education
Summary
Acción Andina is a community-driven reforestation movement that is scaling up a time-tested community reforestation model. Indigenous communities of the high Andes partner with local and international conservation organizations to protect and restore Polylepis woodlands on communal lands. Growing at altitudes of up to 5,000 meters, these forests absorb mist from the clouds and act as life-giving water reservoirs for subsistence agriculture in the lower valleys throughout the year.
