Project
Bunloit Estate

The horizon surrounding Bunloit is marked by Meall Fuar-Mhonaidh, and extensive moorland and heather. The estate land itself however is an oasis of unique and vibrant habitat. Since 2020 we have been performing extensive surveys through these ecosystems to understand the current state of biodiversity and carbon on Bunloit. Now, in 2022, we have a full baseline on the environment here which we hope to build on year after year - supporting the land to host broader biodiversity and sequester more carbon from the air. Bunloit is an open and on-going research project into rewilding in Scotland. We have found regionally and nationally rare habitats and species here. We have been able to see the miraculous recovery of Bunloit's peat bogs after removing poorly designated commercial forestry planations growing on them. And we have partnered with exciting young research bodies to understand the most granular levels of Bunloit, so that we may support the land best, and demonstrate how other land owners can do the same.
In 2021 we published our first report on Bunloit which you can find here - www.bunloit.com/blog/natural-capital-report-2021
In the near future we aim to establish projects involving native tree planting, regenerative agriculture, education and rewilding research.
From here on out we are dedicated to supporting rewilding and re-peopling of the Bunloit estate. Building on local expertise, shared experience and learning, we hope to support the communities around Bunloit, as well as the ecosystems and carbon stored within.
